TUI has started offering return flights from Germany to the Canary Islands – despite government warnings against travel to Spain.

The company is offering seven flights a week to Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, starting 3rd October.

TUI’s German arm said it hoped winter holidays would ‘fully take off’ by November.

German authorities are still currently asking all returning nationals to quarantine for 5 days before taking a PCR test for COVID-19.

Canarian authorities, however, want the German tourists get tested before their arrival and once again – in the Canaries – before returning home.

This would by-pass the need for tourists to quarantine on return home.

An official told El Pais: “Towards the end of the year, there is no other sun and sand destination in Europe. That is why TUI has pushed its decision forward, since it is expected that Germany will soon lift its warning about travel to the Canaries.”

“They are starting to program their vacation packages early because they need a few weeks to be fully operational.”

The UK government is currently in talks with the Canary Islands to secure a similar travel corridor.

COVID-19 in the Canary Islands has dropped to 56 cases per 100,00 inhabitants in the last seven days, as of yesterday’s statistics.

The Valencian Community, home to Benidorm, is down to just 43 cases per 100,000.
