A video passed to Benidorm Reviews shows chairs, tables and umbrellas upturned outside the bar in Albir, on the Costa Blanca in Spain.

A grey Range Rover believed to be the vehicle that caused damage can be seen crashed further on down the street.

Various people can be heard shouting ‘what happened?’ and ‘don’t touch anything’ in Dutch, before urgent requests to call the police and ambulances.

An eyewitness told Benidorm Reviews: “It was a Polish drunk driver in the range rover, four people were hurt. The car came on the sideways and hit people outside Fat Boy in Albir next to the beach lounge.”

Benidorm Reviews has contacted local police but as yet is unable to confirm the nationality of the driver nor the location of the crash.

The figures are significant for Benidorm as it typically ranks as the sixth-most visited destination in Spain behind Madrid, Barcelona, San Bartolomé de Tirajana (Gran Canaria) and Pájara (Fuerteventura).

Madrid and Barcelona are still the top two destinations in Spain this 2022 with 5.2 million and 5 million overnight stays respectively. 

This is because Spain’s two biggest cities tend to receive more tourists in the winter months and early spring than Benidorm.

But so far in 2022, Benidorm’s 1.8 million overnight stays are on par with Pájara and well above the 1.2 million overnight stays in San Bartolomé de Tirajana.

The popularity of Benidorm in 2022 has been bolstered by Spanish tourists choosing to stay on the peninsula. 

Spanish tourists overwhelmingly chose to visit Benidorm in April and recorded 433,000 overnight stays – that’s 160,000 more than the overnight stays from Spanish tourists in Barcelona in April.

Spanish tourists also made up 55% of tourists in Benidorm over the popular Easter week.

British tourists meanwhile made up just 17% of the Benidorm tourist market over Easter week, largely because COVID-19 related travel restrictions were still in place.

Benidorm set to return to ‘normality’ this 2022

The president of the HOSBEC hotel association, Antonio Mayor, said that Benidorm would be ‘back to normal’ this summer 2022.

He celebrated how in April the government dropped the obligation for wearing face masks in public places in Spain.

April was also the final month in which tourists wishing to use Benidorm beaches had to book a demarcated space in advance via a website portal.

Hotels open in Benidorm have also hit 103 – up from 40 in January – in anticipation of the best summer since the COVID-19 pandemic.

British tourists have already responded by making 70% more hotel reservations for the coming summer than they did by this time in 2019.

Meanwhile, Benidorm is also expecting to see a surge in tourism for Portugal after flight connections linking Lisbon to the Costa Blanca are finally back online.

The province of Alicante typically absorbs 70% of all Portuguese tourism to Spain.

In case that didn’t hit home yet – that’s more British tourists making a Benidorm booking than in the year before COVID-19 struck.

The general director of Destinia, Ricardo Fernández, said the figures had made Benidorm’s recovery a ‘reality’ during a meeting with the Fundación Visit Benidorm.

Fernández added that bookings by in-country Spanish tourists were still 1% below 2019 levels.

He said that was because ‘the Spanish had become short-term holidaymakers and preferred making last-minute bookings’.

British tourists meanwhile were the ‘best’ for making summer 2025 reservations well in advance.

Praising the loyalty of the British, he added that hotel bookings this summer 2025 were likely ‘11% more expensive’ than in 2019 due to inflation.

Now 103 hotels open in Benidorm

According to the HOSBEC hotel association, there are now 103 hotels back open in Benidorm.

This is more than triple the 40 hotels that were open back in January this year.

Together with 31 apartment complexes and 8 campsites back open, Benidorm accommodation is now 91% back to life after the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions.

The Benidorm hotels expected to open in June include the Grand Hotel Delfin (20 June), Grand Luxor Hotel (3 June) and the Benidorm East by Pierre et Vacances (17 June).

Benidorm hotels that remain closed without an expected opening date include: Benilux Park, Colors Benidorm, Magic Fenicia, Magic Villa Benidorm, Pensión del Mar, Primavera Park and Rosamar.

According to the most recent HOSBEC hotel report in May, British tourists are currently accounting for 42% of all visitors.

They are followed by the Dutch and the Belgians at 1.9% and 1.8% respectively.

British tourists are also the biggest nationality on the whole Costa Blanca making up 9% of the total.

The hotel occupancy rate entering May was at 73% in Benidorm, rising to 79% on the weekends.

Benidorm’s favourite theme park – Terra Mitica – has just announced it will reopen on 4 June this 2022.

Day tickets are already available for purchase online, as well as season tickets that offer unlimited access and discounts at Aqualandia and Mundomar.

Terra Mitica will be open from 10:30am to 7pm (8pm on Saturdays) until July when it closes at 9pm and August when it closes at 10pm.

Day tickets start from €25, afternoon tickets from €20 and season passes from €57.

The 4 June opening is much later than normal – in 2019, the season started in April.

But it’s a step closer to normality.

Terra Mitica was completely shut throughout 2020 and in 2021 only partially opened from July to September.

The biggest theme park in Benidorm announced in a press release it was ‘extremely excited’ to receive visitors once more.

Visitors will immediately enjoy unrestricted access to over 30 rides and attractions.

These include the emblematic Titánide 100kph+ steel roller coaster, the Sycope spinning pendulum, the Tornado 100m tower with flying chairs and the Vuelo del Fenix with a three-second 54m drop.

For families, also open are the Ícaros, El Puerto de Alejandría and the Laberinto del Minotauro attractions.

Visitors can also watch the Fantasia ballet show at the Pandora auditorium, and a new spectacle at the Circus Maximus de Roma. 

The Aqualandia waterpark is also due to open on 4 June – a limited sale of day tickets for just €19 has just 700 discounts remaining.

Day tickets otherwise start at €26 or €89 for a family of 3.

Mundomar is already open and offering 40% discounts online for a €15 day ticket. 

Mundomar prices otherwise start at €21 for a day ticket or €49 for a season pass.

There were times when we wondered if Benidorm would ever come back to life.

Spain’s announcement of a state of alarm on 14 March in 2020 saw hundreds of Benidorm businesses shut down, thousands of jobs lost and millions without a holiday.

We at Benidorm Reviews have been covering which hotels were closing and opening since the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic.

But the results are now in – Benidorm is 90% back to life!

The number of Benidorm hotels to reopen has hit 103 according to the latest update from the HOSBEC hotel association.

It’s the highest figure since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic – and nearly triple the 40 hotels that were open in January.

According to HOSBEC’s president Toni Mayor, tourism in Benidorm is finally back to its ‘normal cruising speed’.

“The lifting of obligations to wear face masks and the reopening of hotels has finally made tourism in Benidorm friendly and attractive once more,” he said.

“After two years of the pandemic, this was the first Holy Week in which there was no restrictions on the use of beaches.”

“The tourism market is recovering in all areas – and we expect the senior market will also pick up strongly in the coming weeks.”

Benidorm has a very special place in many Spanish pensioners’ hearts. 

They’ve missed out on the government-sponsored IMSERSO scheme that organises annual bus trips to Benidorm since the start of the pandemic until now

For many, it’s the only beachtime they can afford all year.

But some 35% of Spanish tourists over the week of Easter were pensioners on the IMSERSO scheme.

Indeed, Spanish visitors still remain dominant in Benidorm.

They made up 55% of all tourists over Easter week, closely followed by the British who led the lion’s share of the foreign tourist market (37%).

HOSBEC expects that by June 96.4% of all the hotels, apartments and campsites will be back open in Benidorm.

According to HOSBEC’s latest update, just 9 hotels are yet to open.

Hotels still closed in Benidorm include the Gran Hotel Delfin (reopening 20 June) and the Riudor (reopening 2 May).

The Grand Luxor, Rosamar, Magic Fenicia and Magic Villa Benidorm are among the remaining hotels without a reopening date as yet.

HOSBEC data shows there are currently 33,000 hotel beds available in Benidorm, 8,000 apartments and over 10,000 camping spots.

Hotel occupancy rates hit 85% over Easter weekend (22-24 April) and averaged over 70% throughout April.

Alicante Transfers boss Dave McQueen said the business is currently seeing the same of numbers of bookings ‘as in 2019’ for the upcoming autumn tourist season.

Autumn 2019 was of course just before the start of the Covid-19 pandemic – Spain locked down on 14th March 2020. Before which time British tourism made up 44% of all visitors to the Costa Blanca beach city.

“The Benidorm hotel association HOSBEC say they are seeing currently British tourists make up just 16% of total visitors,” McQueen said.

“So if we’re getting the same numbers of bookings as in 2019, as soon as British tourists rise to 44% of all visitors our bookings are going to go through the roof.”

It is a relief for the firm which was due to open the doors of a brand-new beach-front ticket office in Benidorm on 15th March 2020 – one day after Spain called a nation-wide state of alarm. (You can find more about their new office HERE)

“We’d put everything in place to open the ticket office and paid all the staff ready for another Benidorm summer,” McQueen said.

But things are looking up as bookings are particularly strong for October, November and December.

“We don’t normally get any stag or hen bookings for after November, but this year we’ve already got about 20” McQueen said.

“We believe that is going to be a late winter boom for Benidorm and British tourists as the traffic light system changes.

“We’re starting to see 200 bookings for a weekend whereas three weeks ago we were only doing 20.”

It comes as UK Transport Secretary Grant Shapps has announced a major relaxing of travel rules from 4th October 2021.

From that date, passengers who are fully vaccinated will no longer need to take a pre-departure test when returning to the England from Benidorm.

From the end of October, returning travellers will be able to replace the day-two PCR test with a cheaper lateral flow test.

Unvaccinated travellers will still have to pay for PCR tests. The rules will be in place for October half term.

The restrictions include 1/3 of capacity allowed in shopping centers and hotels.

50% of full capacity allowed on terraces (this is for bars and restaurants) And same goes for outdoor markets.
