1. Santa Bárbara Castle, Alicante city

Located in Alicante itself, on the summit of Mount Benacantil at an altitude of 166 metres, Santa Bárbara Castle is home to one of the largest medieval fortresses in Spain. The adventurous among you can climb up to it right from the seafront and gasp at panoramic views over the bay of Alicante. 

Entrance to the castle is free and for those with reduced mobility an elevator is on site to transport you to the castle. The elevator costs 2.70€ each.

2. Chocolate Museum Villajoyosa

If you like chocolate, you can’t have a daytrip in Alicante without visiting the legendary Chocolate Museum in Villajoyosa.

The Valor chocolate company is one of the oldest in Spain – founded in 1881. The exhibition space was created in 1998 and is recognised as The Valencian Chocolate Museum. 

Here you can learn all about the chocolate-making process, the journey of cocoa and get to sample some of the delicious products produced by Valor. 

The 1 hour tour is free and you can buy chocolate at reduced prices. Villajoyosa is a 30-minute drive north from Alicante city.

3. Rio Safari Elche

If you find yourself in need of a day off from the beach, the Rio Safari Elche could be a perfect solution! 

The park is a 25 minute drive from Alicante into the town of Elche – as if it’s own safari wasn’t enough, Elche is also home to the only date palm grove in Europe (the UNESCO Palmeral de Elche). 

With hundreds of animals from all corners of the world to meet, daily demonstrations, restaurants and karting there is something for everyone. The park is also wheelchair accessible. Adult tickets are 22.50€ whilst children’s tickets are 17€.

Elche is a 30-minute drive southwest from Alicante city.

South-west of Alicante city, in Elche, is one of the top zoos in Alicante province.

4. The Natural Parks of the Lagunas de La Mata and Torrevieja

For those who love to see the wonders of nature a daytrip south of Alicante to Torrevieja is a must. 

Not only is Torrevieja an expat hotspot and beach destination, the Torrevieja Natural Park is a protected natural area of ​​3,700 hectares where you’ll find two multicoloured lakes. The first is pink and is the site of the Torrevieja Salt Mine, and the second is green and in the middle of the natural park. It is said these lakes are best viewed at sunset. 

This natural park is a 45-minute drive south from Alicante.

5. Les Fonts d’Algar

Les Fonts d’Algar is home to stunning, natural pools of fresh spring water to swim in and magnificent waterfalls to bathe beneath. It really is a location where you need your camera (with waterproof protection) for those Instagram feeds!

The entrance price varies depending on when you plan to visit, but in high season you will find adult tickets are 5€ and children’s tickets are 2€.

Unfortunately Les Fonts d’ Algar is not wheelchair accessible and people with walking difficulties will not be able to access most parts of the Algar Waterfalls due to the number of steps.

Les Fonts d’Algar is located 55 minutes from Alicante towards the centre of Callosa d’en Sarrià. Bear in mind that during peak season the carparks can fill up, making it wise to either get in early or visit on a weekday.

For one of the most refreshing daytrips in Alicante, you can’t miss the Fonts del Algar.

6. El Castell de Guadalest (The Castle of Guadalest)

Not far from the beautiful Fonts d’Algar you’ll find the medieval town of El Castell de Guadalest (they’re close enough to do both in one daytrip around Alicante).

Guadalest is well known as one of the most beautiful towns in Spain. Once you visit this quirky little pueblo with views to sell-your-house-and-move-in for you’ll see why.

There are plenty of museums to visit in Guadalest, such as The Dolls House Museum, The Historical Vehicle Museum, The Medieval Historical Museum and The Microminiatures Museum. These are fantastic if you’re bringing little ones along. The entry price for each museum differs but in each case it won’t be more than a few euros, with children often entering for free. 

The San Jose castle that tops Guadalest was built in the 11th century and thanks to its strategic location it played a very important role throughout the Middle and Modern Ages – including during Moorish times.

7. Safari Aitana

Just 1 hour away from Alicante is the only zoo in the Valencian Community that you can visit by car, just like an authentic African safari! 

Car is the best way to observe the animals in their natural habitat. The reserve hosts animals from 5 continents so there should be something to see for every member of the family. You can stop at various points along the safari route as guides will feed the elephants or giraffes or zebras and teach you and the little ones a little about these incredible creatures.

Ticket prices are 22€ for adults and 18€ for children from 4 to 10 years old.

It’s quite a daytrip inland to the mountains of Alicante, but there’s no other safari like it.

8. Aquapark Rojales

Located in a natural valley within the Ciudad Quesada de Rojales, 40 minutes drive south from Alicante, AquaPark was inaugurated on July 14, 1986, being the second water park in the Valencian Community and in all of Spain. 

There are a number of water rides for adults and children alike. There are also restaurants and open spaces where you can rest peacefully, away from the noise of the park. Ticket prices are 18€ for adults and 15€ for children.

The Aquapark Rojales is a piece of Spanish history being the second-oldest waterpark in the country.

9. Pola Park

For 25 years Pola Park has been attracting tourists and locals alike with its bumper cars, roller coasters, funhouses and many more fun activities in which to have fun. 

For those who are not keen on theme park rides, there is a great selection of “old fashioned” games where you can put your skill to the test and win prizes to take home! 

Pola Park is just a 30 minute drive south from Alicante city and parking is plentiful. Adult tickets are 21€ whilst a child’s ticket is 19€.

10. Biar Castle

If castles are your thing, then you do not want to miss out on this magnificent castle built in the 12th century. (There are two more castles at Sax and Villena, and they form a defensive triangle that played a major role in the Spanish reconquista.)

Declared a National Monument on the 4th of July 1931, Biar Castle boasts an Almohad vault, guard houses, haylofts, a kitchen with its large fireplace and a “master tower”, used to store the castle’s weapons and supplies. 

The castle is a 50-minute drive inland  from Alicante.

Benidorm’s favourite theme park – Terra Mitica – has just announced it will reopen on 4 June this 2022.

Day tickets are already available for purchase online, as well as season tickets that offer unlimited access and discounts at Aqualandia and Mundomar.

Terra Mitica will be open from 10:30am to 7pm (8pm on Saturdays) until July when it closes at 9pm and August when it closes at 10pm.

Day tickets start from €25, afternoon tickets from €20 and season passes from €57.

The 4 June opening is much later than normal – in 2019, the season started in April.

But it’s a step closer to normality.

Terra Mitica was completely shut throughout 2020 and in 2021 only partially opened from July to September.

The biggest theme park in Benidorm announced in a press release it was ‘extremely excited’ to receive visitors once more.

Visitors will immediately enjoy unrestricted access to over 30 rides and attractions.

These include the emblematic Titánide 100kph+ steel roller coaster, the Sycope spinning pendulum, the Tornado 100m tower with flying chairs and the Vuelo del Fenix with a three-second 54m drop.

For families, also open are the Ícaros, El Puerto de Alejandría and the Laberinto del Minotauro attractions.

Visitors can also watch the Fantasia ballet show at the Pandora auditorium, and a new spectacle at the Circus Maximus de Roma. 

The Aqualandia waterpark is also due to open on 4 June – a limited sale of day tickets for just €19 has just 700 discounts remaining.

Day tickets otherwise start at €26 or €89 for a family of 3.

Mundomar is already open and offering 40% discounts online for a €15 day ticket. 

Mundomar prices otherwise start at €21 for a day ticket or €49 for a season pass.

Leading hotel association HOSBEC announced that Benidorm saw a 73.5% drop in hotel activity.

This means:

• Over-night stays dropped from 1,400,000 in August 2019 to just 370,000 in August 2020. An 86.9% drop.
• International tourists fell 80% compared to last August.
• Spanish tourists fell from about 160,000 in August 2019 to around 70,000 in August 2020.
• Just 75 hotels remained open, compared with around 140 in August 2019.
• In the 75 hotels open, just 40% of August 2019’s fleet of hotel staff stayed working.
• August 2020 saw 55.5% of available Benidorm beds occupied, compared with 93.3% in August 2019.
• Average stays dropped from 5 days to 3.5 days.

Despite this, Benidorm remained Spain’s second-most visited destination.

Only San Bartolomé de Tirajana in Gran Canaria had more over-night stays this August, with 436,000 compared to Benidorm’s 370,000.
